六安地處安徽、河南、湖北三省交界處。南依大別山，北靠淮河，全市總面積1.8萬平方公里，總人口700萬，在全省17個市中面積第一，人口第二。全市現轄金安、裕安兩區，壽縣、舒城、霍山、金寨、霍邱五縣，以及葉集改革發展試驗區和六安經濟技術開發區。六安歷史悠久。四千年前，這里是上古四圣之一皋陶的封地，故六安又稱皋城。公元前121年，漢武帝取“六地平安”之意，置六安國，六安之名沿襲至今。六安區位顯要，交通便捷。西安—南京鐵路、上海—武漢—成都快速鐵路、合肥至九江鐵路、阜陽—六安鐵路穿境而過，上海—西安、合肥—武漢、濟南—廣州、合肥—阜陽、合肥—安慶高速公路以及312國道、206國道、105國道縱橫全市，正在興建的新橋國際機場到六安僅40公里。2006年，六安被交通部列入國家公路運輸樞紐布局規劃。在鐵路和高速公路建成后，到上海3個半小時，到南京、武漢1個半小時，到合肥和新橋國際機場半小時左右。中心城市建設日新月異，一個60平方公里、60萬人口，功能齊全，環境優美的中心城市框架已基本形成，150平方公里、140萬人口的遠景規劃正在編制。
六安幅員遼闊，資源豐富。全市耕地面積660萬畝，可養水面100萬畝，山場1100萬畝。盛產110多種名特優農副產品，是全國重要的商品糧生產基地，油料、麻類、茶葉、蠶繭、板栗、肉禽、羽絨、水產、木竹等產量名列安徽前茅。素有白鵝王國、茶藥寶庫、絲綢

六安生態優良，環境優美。是全省六大旅游區之一。南部為高山峻嶺所盤踞，千峰競險，萬嶺爭秀；中部為低緩的丘陵所環列，滿坡青翠，豐盈流金；北部為淮河平原的一部分，綠蕪平疇，畫里人家。全市已建成240萬畝國家級和省級自然保護區，建成省級以上森林公園近15萬畝，竹海茂林、綠韻醉人。六安市為安徽省生態建設示范市，境內的金寨縣、舒城縣是國家級生態示范區，霍山縣是國家級生態示范試點縣。
自2000年設立省轄市以來，全市國民經濟快速發展，城市面貌煥然一新，人民生活水平明顯提高。特別是近五年，全市經濟年平均增長13.2%，全市地區生產總值、規模工業增加值、財政收入、社會消費品零售總額、城鄉居民收入等主要經濟指標增長速度位居全省前列。隨著經濟的快速發展，全市對外形象不斷提升。先后被建設部授予“中國人居環境獎”、“水環境治理優秀范例城市”，被安徽浙江商會和浙江總商會評為“浙商投資最佳服務市”和“浙商（省外）最佳投資城市”榮譽稱號。

Lu’an city lies on the border of Anhui, Hunan and Hubei provinces, and is located between the northern foot of Dabie Mountain and southern Huaihe River, with a total area of 18 thousand square km and a total population of more than 7 million. The land area ranks first, and the population ranks second in 17 cities of Anhui province. At present, there''re two districts, five counties and two provincial development zones under its jurisdiction. They''re Jin''an district, Yu''an district, Shouxian county, Shucheng county, Huoshan county, Jinzhai county, Huoqiu county, Lu''an Economic and technological development zone and Yeji reform pilot development zone.
Lu''an is extensive and abundant in natural resources with cultivable land area 440 thousand hectares, water area 67 thousand hectares, mountain area 730 thousand hectares. It is an important commodity grain production base in China, producing over 110 kinds of agricultural and sideline products. Many of its agriculture and forest products are at top of list in our province. The products are oil corps, stem-fiber crops, teas, cocoons, Chinese chestnuts, poultries, eiderdowns, aquatic products, woods, etc. It holds famous name of ”realm of white goose”, ”treasure house of tea and herbs”, ”capital of silks”, ”land of hydroelectric power”, ”paradise of tourist”.
Location is superior and traffic is convenience here. Xi’an-Nanjing, Shanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu express railroad, and Hefei-Jiujiang, Fuyang-Lu’an railway traverses the territory. Shanghai-Xi’an, Hefei-Wuhan, Ji’nan-Guangzhou, Hefei-Fuyang, Hefei-Anqing express high ways and national highways 312,206 and 105 meet here and go through the region. Xinqiao international airport being built is only 40 kilometers away. Lu’an city constructions are changing with each passing day. A fully functional, 60-square-kilometre urban frame with 600 thousand populations and elegant environment is taking shape. The prospects of the urban area having 150 square kilometers and 1.4 million populations are planned.
since the city was promoted to the status of a provincially-administered municipality in 2000, Lu’an city has witnessed a booming economy, and the city has taken on a completely new look. Meanwhile, the people’s living standard has greatly improved. Especially in the latest five years, the mean annual economic growth has reached 13.2 percent, and lots of significant economic indexes stand in the front rank in Anhui province such as gross regional product, industrial added value, fiscal revenues, overall retail sales of social consumption products, income of urban and rural residents. Along with the rapid economic development, the external image of Lu’an city has advanced continuously, and it was granted ”National Habitation Environment Award”, and the ”Model City in the Aquatic Environmental Treatment” by the National Construction Department.
