 美國華人生物學(xué)家協(xié)會名錄成立于1998年，主要成員是自上世紀80年代起從中國大陸赴美留學(xué)獲博士學(xué)位、在北美大學(xué)或研究機構(gòu)任助理教授以上職位的華裔生物學(xué)者以及在工業(yè)界做到項目領(lǐng)導(dǎo)以上的華人。該協(xié)會最初命名為“吳瑞協(xié)會”，以表彰康奈爾大學(xué)教授吳瑞在促進中美生命科學(xué)交流中作出的杰出貢獻。

  改革開放初期，當鄧小平提出擴大派遣留學(xué)生的想法后，吳瑞立即向中國教育部建議：世界生命科學(xué)領(lǐng)域發(fā)展很快，中國要盡快培養(yǎng)這一領(lǐng)域的年輕科技人才。為此，他向美國數(shù)十所一流大學(xué)介紹中國的改革開放，并說服它們接受中國留學(xué)生，最終促成了 CUSBEA項目，也就是常說的“吳瑞項目”的實施。項目自1981年連續(xù)8年共派出425人，如今這些人中的很多已成為當今世界生命科學(xué)領(lǐng)域的頂尖專家，為促進我國基因工程和生物技術(shù)的發(fā)展起了重要作用。

  吳瑞協(xié)會在華人生物學(xué)家中的影響越來越廣泛，并于2004年更名為華人生物學(xué)家協(xié)會，成為代表北美等地區(qū)3000多位華裔生物學(xué)精英的專業(yè)組織。很多著名華裔生物學(xué)家，如美國科學(xué)院院士王曉東、美國文理科學(xué)院院士袁鈞英、霍華德休斯醫(yī)學(xué)研究院研究員許田、耶魯大學(xué)干細胞項目主任林海帆、哈佛大學(xué)醫(yī)學(xué)院教授施楊等，都曾在協(xié)會理事會任職。
